The secret to wallpaper that looks beautiful for years isn’t just in the material itself — it’s in what happens to the wall before the first strip ever goes up. Wallpaper is unforgiving: it reveals every bump, crack, and hidden stain under old paint. Here’s what proper prep involves, and why it matters so much.
- Clean the Surface Thoroughly — Walls need to be free of dust, grease, and residue before anything else happens. Kitchens and bathrooms, in particular, often have a thin layer of grease or moisture that can compromise adhesion if it isn’t completely removed.
- Fix Imperfections — Cracks, nail holes, dents, and uneven areas must be filled and sanded smooth. Even small flaws can show through finished wallpaper, especially with lighter colors or smooth, non-textured materials.
- Remove or Treat Existing Wallpaper — Installing new wallpaper directly over old rarely works well — it can trap moisture, cause bubbles, and make the new layer peel prematurely. Old paper should be fully removed and the wall underneath restored before you move forward.
- Prime the Wall — A primer made for wallpaper (often called “size”) does two important things: it helps the paper adhere evenly and protects the wall itself, making future removal far easier if you ever decide to change the look.
- Manage Moisture — This step matters even more in coastal areas of New England and Florida, where humidity can affect adhesion and long-term durability. Bathrooms, kitchens, and rooms near water need moisture-resistant prep and, often, wallcoverings specifically rated for high-humidity environments.
- Plan the Layout Before You Start — Where the first strip begins — and how the pattern moves around windows, doors, and corners — determines how polished the finished room will look. This is where experience matters most: a seasoned installer plans seam placement so your eye follows clean pattern flow, not a jarring mismatch in a corner.
Why This Step Isn’t Optional
We’ve seen beautiful, expensive wallpapers installed over poorly prepared walls — and within months, seams lift, bubbles appear, and that investment starts to look tired. Prep isn’t the exciting part of the process, but it’s the part that determines whether your wallpaper looks flawless for one year or fifteen.
