Wallpaper vs. Paint: Which Is Right for Your Space?

It’s one of the questions we hear most often from clients: should I paint or use wallpaper? Both can transform a room beautifully, but they do very different things — and the right choice depends on what you really want that space to say.

What Paint Does Well
Paint is quick, budget-friendly, and endlessly repeatable. It’s a great option for spaces you plan to refresh often, like a rental or a room whose style might change in a year or two. But paint is, by nature, flat — it sets a mood through color alone.

What Wallpaper Does That Paint Simply Can’t
Wallpaper adds pattern, texture, and depth — dimensions paint just doesn’t offer. The right wallcovering can turn a tiny powder room into a jewel box, make a hallway feel like a gallery, or give a primary bedroom that quiet sophistication you’d expect from a boutique hotel. It’s also surprisingly durable: a high‑quality wallpaper, installed properly, can last 10 to 15 years or more, often outliving several rounds of repainting.

Cost: The Full Picture
Paint usually wins on upfront cost. But wallpaper’s value shows up over time — fewer touchups, less fading, and a finish that continues to look intentional years after installation. For feature walls, dining rooms, and spaces where you want a true design statement, the difference in cost is often smaller than people expect, especially when you factor in how long the result lasts.

Can You Combine the Two?
Absolutely — and that’s where some of our favorite projects come to life. Many clients choose a soft, neutral paint throughout most of the home and reserve wallpaper for high‑impact areas: an entryway, the primary bedroom, a powder room, or a feature wall behind the bed or sofa. This approach delivers drama exactly where you want it, without overwhelming the entire house.

Our Recommendation
If you want flexibility and a fast refresh, paint is a solid choice. If you want a space that feels considered, textured, and truly memorable — the kind people comment on — wallpaper is worth the investment. And when the two are combined thoughtfully, the result speaks for itself.
